Q&A

When Am I Most Likely to Conceive?

Question:

When is the best time to try for a baby? I'm not sure which day my cycle begins, so how do I figure out my fertile period?

Every woman's cycle is different, so it's hard to pinpoint your fertile period exactly. Theoretically, it is possible to conceive on almost any day in your cycle. However, your greatest chance of conception occurs just before, during and just after ovulation (when one mature egg is released from one of the ovaries).

The first day of your period is counted as day one of your menstrual cycle. If your menstrual cycle is regular, say every 28 days, ovulation normally occurs around 14 days prior to your next expected menstrual period, i.e. day 14.

Because sperm can survive in the fallopian tube for 2 or 3 days, the peak fertility period typically begins 2 to 3 days before ovulation. Therefore your best bet would be to try every other day starting on day 10 to 16.

It's important to remember, however, that your menstrual cycle may be shorter or longer than the average 28 days, and may even vary in length from one cycle to another. If you wish to determine your own fertile window, see your physician for a preconception visit. Your provider can review your calendar and advise you on fertility and pregnancy issues such as cervical mucus observation and prenatal supplements as well as identify any potential risks that may complicate pregnancy.
